Job Description
The Heavy Equipment Operator supports commercial and site development construction projects by safely operating a variety of heavy machinery to perform excavation, grading, trenching, utility installation, and site preparation activities. This role plays a key part in delivering high-quality, safe, and efficient work on civil and commercial construction job sites.
Responsibilities
Operate excavators, dozers, loaders, graders, rollers, backhoes, and other heavy equipment used in commercial and site development projects.
Perform earthmoving, grading, trenching, and general site preparation activities according to project plans and specifications.
Assist with utility installation and broader site development tasks, including roadway and commercial site work.
Conduct daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance checks to ensure machinery remains in safe and reliable working condition.
Follow project plans, grade stakes, GPS machine control guidance, and direction provided by supervisors and project management.
Apply knowledge of OSHA safety standards and safe operating practices to maintain a safe and productive work environment.
Work closely with laborers, foremen, and project management personnel to coordinate activities and meet project timelines.
Ensure all work meets established quality standards and complies with safety requirements and company procedures.
Use GPS localization and machine control systems when applicable to improve grading accuracy and efficiency.
Assist with minor equipment maintenance and basic troubleshooting of hydraulic and mechanical issues as needed.
Essential Skills
At least 3 years of experience operating heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, loaders, graders, rollers, and backhoes.
Hands-on experience in commercial construction, site development, or civil construction environments.
Solid understanding of OSHA safety standards and safe operating practices on construction sites.
Proficiency in safe and efficient equipment operation, including earthworks and bulldozer work.
Basic knowledge of hydraulics and equipment troubleshooting.
Valid driver's license.
Ability to work overtime as project demands require.
Ability to collaborate effectively with field crews and project management teams.
Ability to perform daily inspections and basic maintenance on diesel-powered heavy equipment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Ability to read and interpret construction plans and grade stakes is preferred.
GPS machine control experience is preferred.
Experience with GPS localization systems and related technology is a plus.
CDL Class A or Class B license is preferred.
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification is preferred.
Prior experience with utility, roadway, or commercial site development projects.
Experience performing minor equipment maintenance on heavy machinery.
Comfort working around excavation activities and construction crews in active job sites.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $30.00/hr.
