Position Summary
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and care of heavy construction equipment used on civil construction and infrastructure projects. This role requires strong technical expertise, attention to safety, and the ability to work collaboratively with project teams to ensure quality work and timely project completion.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operate and maintain heavy construction equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, loaders, graders, scrapers, compactors, and related machinery.
Read and follow project plans, blueprints, grade stakes, and supervisor instructions to complete work accurately and efficiently.
Conduct pre-shift and post-shift inspections to ensure equipment is operating safely and effectively.
Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs, reporting mechanical issues promptly.
Safely load, transport, and unload materials using proper equipment and operating procedures.
Coordinate equipment activities with supervisors, laborers, and project teams to meet project schedules and production goals.
Adhere to all company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Maintain accurate equipment records, inspection reports, and maintenance documentation.
Assist with additional construction-related tasks as needed to support project success.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Minimum of five (5) years of experience operating heavy construction equipment, with a strong emphasis on bulldozer operation.
Demonstrated ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment safely and efficiently.
Strong understanding of heavy civil construction practices, methods, and processes.
Knowledge of equipment safety standards, OSHA regulations, and industry best practices.
Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, grades, and project specifications.
Experience using GPS machine control systems and other construction technologies.
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills related to equipment operation and performance.
Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance for access to secure facilities, including military installations.
Familiarity with industry-specific tools, technology, and software applications.
Working Conditions
Primarily works outdoors on active construction sites in varying weather conditions.
Regular exposure to dust, noise, vibration, and other construction-related environmental conditions.
May work around heavy machinery, moving equipment, and potentially hazardous materials.
Flexibility to work overtime, weekends, or alternate shifts as project demands require.
Physical Requirements
Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, and perform repetitive movements throughout the workday.
Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Excellent hand-eye coordination, depth perception, and spatial awareness.
Ability to safely enter and exit heavy equipment multiple times per day.
Ability to work for extended periods while operating heavy machinery.
Capable of working in extreme temperatures, rain, snow, and other outdoor conditions.
Ability to remain focused and make sound decisions in a fast-paced construction environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Heavy equipment operator certification or related industry credentials.
Experience working on government, military, DOT, or large-scale infrastructure projects.
Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred.
Compensation
This position is covered under Davis-Bacon wage requirements. Base pay ranges from $27.70 to $34.94 per hour , depending on experience and qualifications.
In addition, employees may be eligible for fringe benefits valued up to $26.40 per hour , based on benefits participation and eligibility through AIS Infrastructure Group.
