At Precision Valley Communications VT, LLC,  the Outside Plant Field Engineer (Utility Pole Surveyor) will support a multitude of surveys of utility poles to support new cable and service drop attachments. Gather critical measurements and analyze clearance requirements to determine the need for pole make-ready work before the installation of new cable attachments. Follow up on make-ready work to verify completeness. Determine path and distance of aerial and underground service drops to feed new customer connections. This position requires a good understanding of utility infrastructure, telecommunication network maps and safety regulations.

What you’ll do

Utility Pole Surveys/Field Data Collection: Conduct field surveys of existing utility poles to gather measurements between electric municipal and telecommunication cable attachments. Utilize field measurement tools (e.g., laser rangefinders, height poles, GPS units) and digital collection platforms to record pole attachments, mid-span drop heights, guy wires, and equipment locations accurately.

• Measurement and Analysis:  Measure the distance between existing electric, municipal and telecommunication cable attachments. Evaluate and measure cable clearances over roads, driveways, railroad crossings, and water crossings to identify potential clearance issues for the new cable attachment.
• Make-Ready Determination: Assess the need for any make-ready work such as pole replacements, extensions, or adjustments to existing attachments and pole-mounted infrastructure to accommodate proposed attachment(s)
• Drop Serviceable Assessments – Determine length and path of service drop from pole/pedestal to customer home.
• Documentation and Reporting: Create detailed reports documenting survey findings, measurements, and any required make-ready recommendations. Maintain accurate records of surveyed poles and their condition. Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Outlook, various applications, and office equipment preferred
• Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other team members to support the planning and design of cable attachment installations.
• Compliance and Safety: Ensure that all work is conducted in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as company safety protocols.
• Problem-Solving: Identify potential challenges or obstacles in the survey process and provide creative solutions to resolve issues related to utility pole clearance and infrastructure compatibility. 

pay rate is $30-$35 an hour, depending on experience

What you’ll need

Minimum of 2 to 5 years relevant work experience, good understanding of utility pole infrastructure, including electric and telecommunication cable attachments, clearances, and make-ready work. Working knowledge of National Electric Safety Code and Telcordia Blue Book standards and requirements.

Field Surveying Skills: Proficiency in conducting field surveys, measuring distances, and evaluating clearance requirements. Hands-on experience with field data collection technology (e.g., Katapult, Fulcrum) is a plus.

Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting and collaborating with team members.  Ability to work independently while maintaining the highest professional standards. May be customer-facing at times and willing to promote company's fiber services

Problem-Solving: Ability to identify challenges in fieldwork and find effective solutions.

Valid driver’s license

Environment

Daily outdoor exposure in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow)

Physical Abilities: Frequent walking over uneven terrain, standing for extended periods

Travel: Local daily travel across the Kingston, NY regional footprint
