Job Title: Heavy Equipment Operator
Job Description
This role is pivotal to the daily operations on active job sites, leading a crew of 2-3 field members. The position combines hands-on fieldwork with crew management, ensuring projects are executed safely, on time, and to high standards.
Responsibilities
Provide daily on-site leadership and direction for storm drain, sewer, freshwater, and natural gas line installation and repair projects.
Safely operate heavy equipment such as excavators, skid steers, and dump trucks.
Enforce OSHA compliance and job site safety protocols.
Read and execute construction plans and utility markings accurately.
Coordinate with the Underground Team Lead to ensure availability of tools, parts, and resources.
Mentor and develop crew members with limited field experience.
Communicate job status, resource needs, and site issues to the Underground Team Lead.
Prepare and clean job sites to eliminate hazards before and after work.
Perform pre and post-trip vehicle inspections.
Train and mentor crew members in the field.
Essential Skills
Proficiency in excavator operation and other heavy equipment.
Comprehensive understanding of underground utility work and safe digging practices.
Strong knowledge of OSHA and safety compliance standards.
Ability to read and interpret construction plans and utility markings.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.
Vocational or technical training in construction or underground utilities is preferred.
Experience with trenchless methods such as pipe lining, pipe bursting, or CCTV inspection is advantageous.
Familiarity with hydro jetting and municipal infrastructure work is beneficial.
Customer-facing communication skills and basic PC skills are a plus.

Work Environment
This position is field-based, working across municipal, commercial, and industrial job sites in Evansville and Southern Indiana in all weather conditions. The role demands physical activity, including frequent lifting and working in confined spaces. Safety gear, including a hard hat, gloves, and safety vest, is required daily. The primary schedule is Monday-Friday with an on-call rotation every 5-6 weeks, with no overnight travel required.

The pay range for this position is $41600.00 - $72800.00/yr.
