Job Description
The Cable Technician I role offers an opportunity to develop hands-on skills in structured cabling and low-voltage installations as part of a collaborative technical team. You will support the installation, termination, and organization of low-voltage cabling and equipment while learning industry best practices, safety standards, and documentation requirements. This position is ideal for individuals with mechanical or electrical aptitude who are eager to build a long-term career in the low-voltage and structured cabling field.
Responsibilities
Install work area outlets for floor monuments, modular furniture using surface mount boxes, and wall locations using appropriate hardware and box eliminators.
Route and drop cable down walls using fish tape or other approved methods, ensuring clean and organized pathways.
Route cable through modular furniture systems while maintaining proper cable management and protection.
Perform pre-termination procedures including organizing, forming, and dressing cables, determining appropriate length and slack, and labeling cables accurately.
Suspend and support cable correctly using cable trays, J-hooks, D-rings, bridal rings, and trapeze supports in accordance with industry standards.
Build telecommunications closets by mounting and installing backboards, cross-connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic components, and related hardware.
Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cabling as required to meet safety and performance standards.
Perform fire-stopping procedures on fire-rated walls, including installing sleeves, pulling cable through sleeves, and properly sealing core penetrations.
Terminate low-voltage devices and connections for Cat 5, Cat 6, and fiber optic cabling according to specifications.
Read and follow prints, drawings, and project documentation to complete installations accurately.
Complete all required paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, tool transfers, and other project documentation.
Follow safety guidelines and site rules, including adherence to OSHA 10 standards where applicable.
Collaborate with team members and supervisors to ensure projects meet quality, schedule, and customer expectations.
Essential Skills
Zero (0) to one (1) year of experience in electrical or structured cabling environments.
Mechanical and electrical aptitude with a strong willingness to learn and develop technical skills.
Basic knowledge of the construction industry and construction site practices.
Experience or familiarity with cabling, including cable pulling and terminating low-voltage cabling.
Ability to install and route Cat 5 and Cat 6 cabling in commercial or construction environments.
Ability to assist with or perform pulling and routing of fiber optic cabling.
Understanding of proper cable support methods using cable trays, J-hooks, D-rings, bridal rings, and trapeze systems.
Ability to read and follow prints and basic construction drawings.
Strong attention to detail for labeling, organizing, and dressing cables and terminations.
Capability to complete administrative tasks such as timesheets, work orders, and material documentation accurately and on time.
Commitment to safe work practices and adherence to OSHA 10 guidelines where required.
Reliability and flexibility to work early shifts and occasional Saturdays as needed.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
OSHA 10 certification or the ability and willingness to obtain it.
Experience with fiber optic cabling, including pulling and basic handling.
Prior exposure to low-voltage device terminations in a commercial setting.
Previous experience in structured cabling or construction environments, even at an entry level, is preferred.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work under supervision while progressively taking on more responsibility.
Interest in progressing through a defined career path from Technician I to higher-level technical and leadership roles.

Work Environment
This role is based primarily at a work site in Manassas, VA, with the expectation that you remain flexible and willing to support additional projects across the Northern Virginia area as needed. You will work in active construction and commercial environments, performing tasks such as pulling and terminating Cat 5, Cat 6, and fiber optic cabling, building telecom closets, and installing cable support systems. The typical schedule runs Monday through Friday from approximately 5:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with some schedules extending to around 5:30 PM and occasional Saturday work required based on project demands. The environment requires comfort with early start times, working on your feet, and handling tools, ladders, and cabling equipment in a variety of indoor construction settings while following safety protocols and site requirements.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $26.00/hr.
