Technician Fiber II
Job Summary
The Fiber Splicing Technician is responsible for the installation, splicing, termination, testing, and troubleshooting of fiber optic cable systems to ensure reliable, high-quality network performance. This role supports both new construction and maintenance activities, working closely with internal teams and customers to complete projects safely, on time, and to specification.
Technicians operate specialized equipment, interpret technical documentation, and maintain consistent communication with department leads, network operations, and construction teams to coordinate work and resolve service issues efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Splice, terminate, and test various types and sizes of fiber optic cable, including single-mode, multimode, stranded, and ribbon fiber
- Perform troubleshooting and resolve technical issues related to fiber networks and connectivity
- Conduct optical continuity and conformance testing using industry-standard equipment
- Read, interpret, and work from maps, blueprints, schematics, and splice documentation
- Perform splicing modifications and maintenance in aerial, underground, buried, and indoor environments
- Inspect, test, and maintain splicing and testing equipment on a routine basis
- Coordinate daily with leadership, network operations, service delivery and construction teams regarding job status, outages, and scheduling
- Support project planning, scheduling, and execution to meet timelines and customer expectations
- Ensure all work is performed in compliance with safety standards and company procedures
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required
- Associate degree in a technical field preferred, or equivalent industry/military experience
- 1-2+ years of fiber splicing (required)
- 2–5+ years of experience in telecommunications (preferred)
- Experience with fiber construction, installation, and maintenance (preferred)
Required Technical Skills
- Proficiency with fusion splicing and optical test equipment (e.g., EXFO, Sumitomo, Fujikura, Fitel, or similar)
- Understanding of fiber types, cable structures, and industry standards
- Knowledge of universal communications color codes
- Ability to analyze and resolve technical problems efficiently

- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds
- Must be able to distinguish between colors
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- Ability to operate company vehicles and equipment (Bucket truck with attached trailer)
- Willingness to work flexible schedules, including extended hours, weekends, and on-call rotations as needed and on short notice
- Must be able to pass a D.O.T. physical to drive company vehicle (CDL not required)
Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screening
