OSP Inspector
Position Summary
The OSP Inspector is responsible for ensuring fiber optic construction activities meet company standards, engineering designs, and regulatory requirements. This role supports the full lifecycle of telecom infrastructure deployment, including construction oversight, quality assurance, and documentation. The Inspector works closely with contractors, project managers, and engineers to ensure safe, compliant, and high-quality installation of aerial, underground, and buried fiber networks. Travel throughout market is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily field inspections of fiber construction (aerial, underground, buried)
- Ensure contractor work complies with engineering prints, specifications, and permits
- Verify proper installation of conduit, cable depth, handholes, pedestals, and poles
- Identify and document construction defects, safety violations, and quality issues
- Monitor adherence to project schedules and report progress
- Act as field liaison between the company and construction contractors
- Provide direction and clarification on design standards and expectations
- Track and manage corrective actions and remediation work
- Assist with change orders and field design adjustments
- Maintain accurate inspection logs, daily reports, and photo documentation
- Record all findings in company systems and track issue resolution
- Review contractor deliverables and ensure proper closeout packages
- Support permitting and compliance documentation
- Ensure compliance with:
- Company construction standards
- Local/state regulations and permits
- National Electric Safety Code (NESC) requirements
- Identify and escalate safety risks in the field
- Support incident reporting (e.G., utility strikes, damages)
- Assist with network maintenance and troubleshooting post-construction
- Support inspections related to outages or emergency repairs
- Contribute to long-term infrastructure reliability and performance
Required Qualifications
Experience
- 3–5+ years in OSP construction, inspection, or telecom field operations
- Experience with fiber optic networks (FTTH, backbone, or distribution)
- Background working with aerial and underground construction
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of OSP construction standards and practices
- Ability to read and interpret:
- Engineering drawings
- Fiber route maps and staking sheets
- Familiarity with permitting and right-of-way requirements
- Experience with GPS/mapping tools and reporting software
Certifications (preferred)
- NESC knowledge or certification
- OSHA safety training (10 or 30)
- Fiber construction or telecom certifications
Other Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel frequently
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Note: Flexibility and a willingness to step outside of the defined role at times is essential in this position.
