Overview
The Data Center Fiber Technician I is responsible for assisting with the installation, termination, testing, and documentation of fiber optic cabling systems in mission-critical data center environments. This role performs work under the direction of senior technicians and project leads while maintaining compliance with BICSI standards, customer specifications, and safety requirements.
Responsibilities
- Install and route single-mode and multimode fiber optic cabling.
- Assist with fiber terminations and fusion splicing.
- Pull, dress, secure, and label fiber optic cables.
- Install patch panels, fiber enclosures, cassettes, and cable management systems.
- Perform basic fiber testing using optical power meters, visual fault locators (VFL), and continuity testers.
- Assist senior technicians with OTDR testing and troubleshooting.
- Read and interpret basic construction drawings and cable schedules.
- Maintain proper bend radius and cable routing standards.
- Complete labeling and documentation in accordance with project requirements.
- Follow all customer, BICSI, OSHA, and site safety procedures.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Assist with inventory management and material staging.
Qualifications
- BICSI Installer 1 (INST1) Certification
- 1–3 years of structured cabling or fiber optic installation experience.
- Basic knowledge of fiber optic installation practices.
- Ability to identify fiber color codes.
- Experience using hand tools and basic fiber installation equipment.
- Ability to read basic blueprints and cable schedules.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.
