This role is responsible for ensuring equipment assets are safe, reliable, cost-effective, and aligned with project demands across multiple job sites.
This position plays a key role within the Equipment Department and may supervise shop and field technicians depending on project needs. The Equipment Superintendent partners closely with operations, logistics, and safety teams to ensure equipment availability supports project schedules.
Success in the first 12 months will include improving fleet reliability and utilization, reducing equipment downtime through effective preventative maintenance programs, maintaining accurate asset tracking, and ensuring full compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
What You Will Do
Lead the planning, scheduling, and execution of preventative maintenance and repair programs to ensure equipment reliability and minimize downtime.
Manage the diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of heavy equipment to ensure assets are safe, compliant, and work-ready.
Oversee equipment utilization, lifecycle planning, and reinvestment strategies to support cost-effective operations.
Maintain accurate equipment records, including inventory, maintenance history, inspections, oil sampling, and repair data.
Supervise and support shop and field technicians, including assigning work, coaching, and performance management.
Partner with operations, logistics, and safety teams to align equipment availability with project schedules and field demands.
Inspect damaged equipment to determine root causes, normal wear versus misuse, and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
Analyze equipment performance and failure trends to implement continuous improvement initiatives.
Review and approve equipment, tools, and parts purchases to ensure alignment with budget and return on investment objectives.
Evaluate repair versus replacement decisions, including use of internal resources or third-party vendors.
Oversee transportation of equipment, ensuring compliance with permits, inspections, and regulatory requirements.
Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and company safety standards, and actively support safety programs and incident reviews.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required.
10+ years of experience managing or supporting heavy equipment fleets in construction, environmental, or industrial operations.
Proven ability to plan and execute equipment maintenance, diagnostics, and fleet management strategies.
Strong knowledge of heavy equipment including excavators, loaders, dozers, and other construction equipment.
Experience supervising technicians or field personnel.
Working knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and equipment safety and compliance requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Heavy Equipment Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or related field.
Experience in disaster response or emergency operations environments.
Familiarity with telematics systems and OEM diagnostic tools.
Experience with budgeting, cost control, and equipment lifecycle analysis.
What to Expect
This role combines leadership, technical expertise, and field coordination in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. You will manage equipment operations that directly support disaster recovery efforts, often under tight timelines and rapidly changing conditions.
Work will include both office-based planning and hands-on field oversight across active project sites. Frequent travel and deployment should be expected, as project locations vary based on disaster response needs. The schedule may include extended hours, weekends, and on-call responsibilities during active operations.
You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure equipment readiness, troubleshoot operational challenges, and keep projects moving efficiently. The role requires adaptability, strong decision-making, and a commitment to safety, reliability, and continuous improvement.
