Job Description
The Communications Technician I is an entry-level role (0-1 year of experience) responsible for learning and performing structured cabling tasks while supporting a team in commercial and data center environments.
Key ResponsibilitiesCable Installation & Routing
Install work area outlets in floors, walls, and modular furniture
Route cable through walls and ceilings using fish tape or similar tools
Route cable through modular furniture systems
Organize, dress, and label cabling prior to termination
Cable Support & Infrastructure
Properly support cables using cable trays, J-hooks, D-rings, bridal rings, and trapeze systems
Determine cable length, slack, and labeling standards
Closet Buildouts (IDF/MDF)
Mount and install backboards, racks, patch panels, and cross-connects
Install fiber optic enclosures and associated hardware
Perform grounding for racks, equipment, and cabling
Firestopping & Pathways
Perform fire-stopping procedures on fire-rated walls
Install sleeves and route cable through penetrations
Termination & Testing
Terminate low-voltage devices
Assist with testing and certification of copper and fiber cabling
Documentation & Compliance
Accurately complete required documentation (timesheets, work orders, material tracking, etc.)
Follow all company, customer, and industry safety and quality standards
General Duties
Required Tools
Technicians should be familiar with standard hand tools, including:
Screwdrivers (Phillips and flathead)
Drywall saw
Tape measure and level
Snips and pliers (needle nose and channel locks)
Hammer and wrench set
Cable stripper
Flashlight and gloves
Screening / Technical Knowledge Areas
Candidates may be evaluated on:
Fiber and copper cabling knowledge
Splicing concepts and methods
IDF/MDF installation experience
Punch-down techniques and timing expectations
Understanding of color codes
Cable testing tools (e.g., Fluke/Versiv)
Quality assurance practices (labeling, termination, cable management)
Troubleshooting and problem-solving approach
Experience working in live data center environments

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $24.00/hr.
