Compensation: $100â$250+/hour (flexible based on experience)
Overview
We are seeking a highly analytical
Electrical Engineer / Energy & Power Analytics Consultant to support a growing data center advisory firm focused on
reducing Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), optimizing energy consumption, and minimizing operational risk in mission-critical facilities.
This consultant will play a key role in analyzing data center power and energy systems, identifying inefficiencies, and contributing to actionable strategies that improve efficiency
without compromising uptime or reliability.
This engagement is structured in two phases:
- Phase 1 (Remote): Data ingestion, modeling, and analytics
- Phase 2 (On-Site): Targeted audits and validation of improvement strategies
Key Responsibilities
Data Analysis & Insight Development (Primary)
- Analyze data center operational datasets, including:
- Utility metering and power consumption trends
- UPS systems, switchgear, and generator performance
- Power distribution systems (PDU/RPP)
- Power monitoring platforms and telemetry
- Identify inefficiencies contributing to elevated PUE
- Develop insights on:
- Energy loss across infrastructure layers
- Load imbalance and stranded capacity
- Opportunities for efficiency gains and cost reduction
Reporting & Client Deliverables
- Produce clear, data-driven reports outlining:
- Key inefficiencies and risks
- Recommended corrective actions
- Estimated impact on PUE and operating costs
- Support client-facing discussions by explaining technical findings in a digestible manner
On-Site Audit Support (Secondary)
- Travel to data center sites (as needed) to:
- Validate findings from remote analysis
- Inspect power infrastructure and operational practices
- Support development of implementation roadmaps
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with leadership and non-technical stakeholders to translate engineering analysis into commercial recommendations
- Partner with mechanical/cooling experts to align on holistic PUE reduction strategies
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelorâs degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Physics, or related field
- 5â10 years of experience in mission-critical environments (data centers strongly preferred)
- Hands-on experience with:
- Utility metering systems
- UPS systems and battery backup infrastructure
- Switchgear and electrical distribution systems
- Backup generation systems
- Power monitoring / energy management systems
- Strong analytical, modeling, and reporting capabilities
- Ability to interpret complex operational datasets and surface actionable insights
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) â Electrical
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
- Data Center certifications (CDCP, DCCA, or similar)
- Experience with:
- Energy procurement or utility rate analysis
- Power system efficiency modeling
- Data center design or operations
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Experienced in data center environments (colo or hyperscale)
- Strong technical depth in electrical systems with a bias toward analytics and problem-solving
- Comfortable working independently in a consulting-style, ambiguous startup environment
- Able to communicate clearly with clients (not purely back-office)
- Pragmatic, results-oriented, and focused on efficiency gains and risk mitigation
Engagement Details
- Part-time consulting role (approx. 10â20 hours/week to start)
- Flexible schedule
- Travel required for on-site audits (expenses covered)
- Opportunity to expand scope as additional client projects are won
What Success Looks Like
- Identification of measurable PUE reduction opportunities
- High-quality client deliverables that translate data into action
- Contribution to repeatable frameworks for energy optimization
- Direct impact on reducing data center operating costs and improving resilience
