Job Description
The Service Technician installs, maintains, and repairs roller grinders and related equipment at customer sites across the United States. This role combines hands-on mechanical work, troubleshooting PLC-driven components, and safe operation of industrial equipment with frequent travel and direct customer interaction. The technician prepares for and executes service calls efficiently while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, and customer satisfaction.
Responsibilities
Complete roll changes on roller grinders, including removing dull rolls, changing bearings, replacing belts, and installing sharpened rolls.
Replace worn or damaged parts in roller grinders and associated equipment as needed.
Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues on roller grinders and accessory equipment to identify root causes and implement effective repairs.
Work with PLC-driven components, supporting troubleshooting and basic adjustments as required for proper equipment operation.
Ensure DOT compliance within 90 days of hire and maintain all required travel and driving standards.
Maintain professional and courteous customer relations, clearly communicating work performed and any recommendations.
Maintain a safe work environment in the shop, while preparing for service calls, and while working at customer sites and on the road.
Organize and prepare tools, parts, and materials for service trips to ensure efficient and timely job completion.
Effectively and safely operate forklifts, overhead cranes, winches, and power tools during installation, maintenance, and repair tasks.
Perform mechanical repairs, preventive maintenance, and adjustments on equipment using hand tools and power tools.
Interpret and work from blueprints, drawings, and technical documentation to complete installations and repairs.
Support welding and fabrication tasks as needed for repair, modification, or installation of equipment components.
Travel to customer sites by air or vehicle, including day trips and overnight stays, typically up to 3-4 nights per week depending on location and service requirements.
Participate in ongoing training and cross-training opportunities to expand skills across related departments.
Complete required documentation, such as service reports and progress updates, accurately and in a timely manner.
Essential Skills
At least 1 year of previous experience in maintenance, welding, or travel-based field service work.
Strong mechanical skills with the ability to perform repairs, adjustments, and preventive maintenance on industrial equipment.
Experience with welding and fabrication in a maintenance or construction environment.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
Hands-on experience with troubleshooting mechanical systems and basic troubleshooting of PLC-driven components.
Familiarity with pneumatics and related components used in industrial equipment.
Proficiency using hand tools and power tools safely and effectively.
Valid driver's license and ability to travel extensively throughout the United States, including frequent overnight stays.
Ability to work safely with forklifts, overhead cranes, winches, and other material-handling equipment.
Capability to work 45-55 hours per week, including 3-4 consecutive days and occasional weekends.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience in millwork, millwright work, or construction is beneficial.
Experience in field service roles involving coast-to-coast or multi-state travel.
Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices for industrial machinery.
Exposure to CDL-A and DOT-related requirements is advantageous.
Comfort working with PLCs in an industrial environment.
Strong organizational skills to manage tools, parts, and travel logistics.
Effective communication skills for interacting with customers and internal teams.
Desire and willingness to cross-train in other departments and expand technical skills.
Ability to adapt to varying job sites, schedules, and travel demands.

Work Environment
This is a full-time role typically working 3-4 consecutive days per week, averaging 45-55 hours. You will work both in the shop and at customer sites, with travel ranging from local day trips to overnight stays, usually around 3 nights per week. Travel can be coast-to-coast, with a strong concentration in Midwestern states, and may involve flying or driving depending on the assignment. You will work in industrial environments around roller grinders and related machinery, using forklifts, overhead cranes, winches, hand tools, power tools, and welding and fabrication equipment. The role occasionally requires weekend work during peak periods or specific projects, and emphasizes strict adherence to safety practices and DOT-related requirements.
