Role Overview
The Fiber Design Technician I is responsible for designing fiber optic paths from the light source to the customer, utilizing both existing and new fiber infrastructure. This role supports the
Outside Plant (OSP) design team and collaborates closely with splicers, engineers, and field technicians to ensure accurate and efficient fiber deployment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design fiber routes from the central office or hub to customer premises using GIS and design tools.
- Assist in the design and documentation of fiber transport networks, including backbone, metro, and access systems.
- Prepare and maintain fiber design packages including routing of fiber cable, splice points, and construction documentation.
- Collaborate with splicing teams to troubleshoot discrepancies between design documentation and field conditions.
- Verify handhole locations, splice points, and field data to ensure design accuracy.
- Use client-designated tools to update network layouts, splice diagrams, and as-built documentation.
- Provide documentation for construction, permitting, and internal record-keeping.
- Follow structured training programs, design standards, and documentation procedures with precision.
- Adapt quickly to changing priorities and deadlines while maintaining quality and attention to detail.
Required Experience & Skills
- 1–3 years of experience in telecom, fiber network design, or documentation
(internship or academic project experience may be considered)
- Foundational knowledge of fiber optic aerial and buried plant design principles, including splicing.
- Ability to read and interpret OSP construction drawings, splice diagrams, and network records.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Office applications for reporting and documentation.
- Strong troubleshooting and communication skills with the ability to coordinate across teams.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working under tight deadlines.
- Associate degree or technical training in telecommunications, engineering, or related field preferred.
Preferred Knowledge & Tools
- Experience with GIS-based design platforms (ArcGIS, 3-GIS, ArcMap, Google Earth) for mapping and route tracking.
- Familiarity with NetCracker, KMZ files, or other network management systems.
- Exposure to optical design/simulation tools (OptiSystem, OTDR analysis software, DWDM/GPON planning tools).
- Understanding of fiber management databases and documentation standards such as Network Manager.
